Well, today they had the annual Cinco de Mayo Parade in Pilsen here in Chicago. The Parade didn't seen to be as big as it has been in the recent past, and the crowds of spectators was visable smaller, but a good time was had by all. Despite all the news over the current health crisis of the H1N1 virus /"Swine Flu" pandemic that is spreading around the globe, people still came out to enjoy their heritage and their community. It was musical, colorful, and a very festive celebration. Viva La Vida!
Hey, hey...last friday, I want to The Cheesburger Show Tweet-Up at the Sheffield Bar & Grill, It was an event sponsored by the Chicago Tribune to promote The Cheeseburger Show on CLTV, a local news station owned by the Tribune. It was also an event to bring users of the social networking site Twitter together to share conversation, food & drink. For the most part the crowd was young staffers from the Chicago Tribune, but there were a few folks (like me) who were there just to snag a free dinner. It was a well attended gathering, but the venue was a little too small for my taste. The Cheeseburger Show goes around Chicagoland looking for the best Cheeseburger in the city, I wonder how I can get a job like that? I'll tell you this, the Cheeseburgers served at Sheffield's aren't half bad...Yummy!
Today, as I was roaming the streets of this great city, I stumbled upon this. Chicago Police Officers and their supporters marched on City Hall. City Hall was ringed with hundreds of protesters demanding better pay, more officers, and the removal of Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weiss as the city's Top Cop. The police officers say that they have been working without a contract for over 21 months, and they are upset at Chicago Mayor, Richard Daley, and Superintendent Weiss's lack of support for pay increases for the officers. Many officers were also calling for Superintendent Weiss to be removed from his position sighting that he doesn't have the support of many of the rank and file officers of the force. Weiss, a former FBI Agent, was never a Police Officer. He was brought into the post by Mayor Daley in the city's effort to reform the police department after several high profile incidents of police misconduct in recent years.
Today's public protest was scheduled to coincide with a visit from members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who are visiting Chicago in their efforts to review all the cities competing to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Mayor Daley has been an ardent advocate for bringing the Olympic Games to Chicago. Well, I guess you just never know what you'll see on the streets of Chicago.
The Author & Journalist Ellis Cose of Newsweek magazine gave a lecture on Abraham Lincoln at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mr.Cose, an alumnus of the University of Illinois, was hosted by the Alumni Association. The Black Alumni Advisory Council at UIC, of which I'm a member, was out to support the event. It was a very nice affair, and very well attended (I hear 250 people registered to attend the lecture.) Well, here are a few snapshots of my fellow alums at the event.
Now, try not to laugh, but I just got my first Digital Camera. Yeah, I know that I am sooooo behind the times, but what can I say. I'm a Caveman, the was of your world are so strange to me. Anyway, I'm cutting my teeth with a Kodak ZD710. I guess if I get the hang of it my next buy might be an Olympus E-410. Just so you know, I'm not leaving film behind. My Olympus Infinity Super Zoom 300 is always with me, and I just got a new Flash for my trusty Canon T50, so I'll still be at the camera shop buying film rolls, too. Well, here's my bite of the Apple.
